Nestled away in this little dish and covered with deliciousness, these cookie topped brownies almost look like a success. But don't be deceived. After plenty of time in the kitchen, more butter than Paula Deen could stomach, and lots of tasty chocolate- these brownies go down in my
TWD repertoire as a big fat (and delicious) failure.

After only fourty minutes in the oven they were totally browned and smelled done. I knew the top couldn't take any more and should have tented them early on, but I was distracted by articles about
not eating the batter after I had finished eating some of the most delicious brownie batter I've ever tried. It was too late, so I removed them, and after cooled, was shocked by this molten caramel river of goo running through the brownies! I'm not one to shy away from undercooked foods, though (except for ground beef) so I grabbed a spoon. While they were delicious, they were disappointing. I'll have to try again and get a few tricks up my sleeve from
the other bakers- because with this much butter and chocolate, this recipe has got to be worth it, right? *Update* After sitting over night, these are much more cohesive and freaking good. Dorie wins again (even if they don't look so hot!)
Grab the recipe at
Beth's blog, or
here- where's these actually look beautiful (and surely tasted delicious!)
And stay tuned for next week's Cinnamon Squares, some amazing Ina recipes, and the results from my ultrasound later this week! It is a boy or a girl? Your guess is as good as mine...
Looks like you ran into the same problem that I did: a gooey brownie mess!! I actually was so put off by it that I threw the entire thing out....
ReplyDeleteThat fault line is really weird. And the "burned" top. Sorry! Mine were a little underbaked, but didn't crack like that. But I concluded that this is WAY too much use of butter, eggs, chocolate and sugar and I'd rather have a regular brownie one time and I love me a chocolate chip cookie, but I don't think they need to be together like this!
ReplyDeleteOoh, can't wait to hear about your baby!
I'm sorry it didn't work out for you! Love your new picture by the way (of you) :) I wasn't sure how impressed I was with this recipe until they sat overnight. Very tasty!
ReplyDeleteI do hope you try this one again because it's a keeper. I love that good or bad - fat be damned - everyone topped it with ice cream!
ReplyDeleteWell, I think you saved them with the ice cream, and that was a great idea! I was a little surprised by the odd way this one baked up. Thankfully, it worked out in the end. Good luck with the US!! Can't wait for the big news.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I kept looking at the recipe to make sure I had the amount of butter right... almost a POUND!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry these didn't work out for you, what a shame. :(
OOOOh, the Eat me Delicious picture does look yummy!
ReplyDeleteDON'T FIND OUT...we were suprised by the sex of all three of our babies, and it is SOOOOO much fun that way!!
Can't wait till next week for more yummy goodness!
:-)
NOOOOOO! I MUST EAT THE BATTER! Sorry you weren't crazy about these... I actually wasn't either! But yours do look really delicious! But seriously... 3 1/2 sticks of butter?! And I was disappointed! Something must have been wrong!
ReplyDeleteOur brownies could be twins! Mine did the exact same thing.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your troubles with this one. I was a much bigger fan of the batter than the final product so I probably would have preferred yours.
ReplyDeleteMine did exactly what yours did.
ReplyDeleteWe just grabbed spoons too.
Sometimes a gooey brownie mess is delicious, especially topped with ice cream!
ReplyDeleteI had a similar experience...the whole caramel river bubbling under a crisp topping...my brownies were ok, it was the cookie dough that was not baking through evenly...still, I saved enough to enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI thought about making these the base of an ice cream sundae. Unfortunately, I couldn't stop eating them to actually get them in a bowl. Love the pictures.
ReplyDeleteGlad these were delicious, if not the prettiest ever! Interesting that they cracked like that....
ReplyDeleteVanilla ice cream sounds like the perfect topping for the chipster topped brownie! I'm glad it came together for you the next day!
ReplyDeleteThis was a bit of a painful recipe, what with all the butter and the uncooked middle. Mine oozed after sitting for an hour (guess I shouldn't have pulled them out when they tested done!) Ahh, next week might start tonight!
ReplyDeletetoo bad it didn't work out. The ice cream makes it all better though.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Don't you hate when things just don't turn out!
ReplyDeleteThese seemed to be a problem for many people...they still tasted yummy though!
ReplyDeleteGreat save with the ice cream. I've been wishing that I had some, to go with these and my strudel. Time to get out the ice cream maker!
ReplyDeleteI thought the cracked versions people were getting were wonderful...sort of mysterious and fun and reminded me of peanut brittle, which I love! Yours looks great, and perfectly wonderful in that little dish with the scoop on top.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we had the same problem. Baked some more, and they they were a little over done. Ah, well.
ReplyDeleteYours looks delicious.
I guess it is possible to be too rich!
ReplyDeleteThere's a recipe in the Tate Bake Shop Cookbook for a recipe like this only in reverse -- brownie topped blondies -- that are very good, but with a much lower butter/sugar quotient than Dorie's.
I just found your blog and I love it. I too have a tall husband, little boy, and wee dog. How funny! Great site. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOoooh! Can't wait to hear about your ultrasound - so exciting! I had issues with these brownies too. They tested done and everything, but nope! Oh well. Glad you liked them on day 2! Dorie usually comes through for us in the end!
ReplyDeleteThis recipe seems to have caused problems for so many of us! My cookie batter sank into the brownies. They were tasty but probably too much work (and too much butter!) to make again.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that these were even better after they sat over night. Your reaction to the molten river of cookie dough is hysterical: grab a spoon. Oh, we could be fast friends :)
