TWD- World Peace Cookies (finally!)

How did Tuesday get here so soon? Time is speeding ahead and it's almost Valentine's Day already. My sister in laws thought it would be fun to make a gourmet dinner for our husbands and have a really fun date. Kristi wants us to wear updo's and Auburn is even busting out the chargers for our meal. I'd love some menu suggestions keeping in mind the fact that we have five kids between us and will be cooking with them and my husband's "no tomatoes, no chocolate, nothing too spicy or delicious" stomach requirements. How's that for tricky? It should be fun though and I can't wait to bust open my Dorie book and browse the desserts for our special meal.

As for these cookies, they are appropriately named and freaking good too. They come together easily and are open for variation. For an interesting debate on the right salt to top them with, check this post. I think I'll book mark it for the next time I'm in the market, lol! I did make these with just a sprinkle of kosher salt on top and they were great. Next time, I think I'll make them a little broader and keep slicing them a bit thicker than Dorie suggests. I think she's a bit of a miracle worker in the number of cookies she can get out of a batch! I loved her anecdote about eating her own recipe at a luncheon. She's a great writer of stories and recipes alike.

Be sure to stop by Jessica's blog for the recipe. I'm glad these cookies were finally chosen- they're delicious! And let me know what you'd make for your honey- the clock is ticking! Please accept my apologies for the picture shortage, too. My kitchen will be done soon and I hope my life will get in order then! :)

  1. No tomatoes, no chocolate, nothing too spicy..." is definitely a challenge in creating a menu (not to mention the addition of five kids)!

Your WP cookies are so perfectly shaped. Mine were delicious but a bit rough round the edges!

  4. your oookies look so wonderfully round! (mine do not..)

Hmm..tricky plates to fill with those criteria for Valentine's Day. I love the up-do/gourmet idea for sure...Having a husband with similar requirements, I understand your dilemma. Maybe the kids have "breakfast for dinner" with heart-shaped pancakes/etc and the grown ups have some sort of savory-filled crepes--more "dinner" less "breakfast" ingredients? Now, mind you, I suggest this never having made crepes myself so I can't help with any crepe-making tips! ;)
    Good Luck!

  5. Your cookies look delicious, Anne, and I like them thickly sliced, too. What a fun idea for Valentine's day! I'd do a fabulous roast like a tenderloin or a rack of lamb or a crown roast of veal. That's not very frilly, though. I hope you post the final dinner.

  8. I loved these, too! Sounds like a fun V-tines Day plan! I say homemade mac and cheese for the kids, and then you guys can enjoy a great meal without having to worry about their tastes!

  9. Have you ever tried Nomato?

It is a tomato sauce made with beets and carrots. My daughter has tons of allergies, and can not have tomatoes.

I have tasted it, and it tastes just like spaghetti sauce.

    We loved these cookies.

  12. Oooooh -- your special dinner sounds like so much fun! Can't tell you how often I have to come up with something to cook for the "nothing too spicy or delicious" crowd! I usually make a beef or pork roast of some persuasion in those situations, and mashed potatoes usually go over well with even the pickiest eaters! Good luck! I am so glad that you enjoyed the WP cookies! I might sprinkle mine with a little extra salt before baking next time -- great idea! These are freaking good!

  15. Did I read that right, "nothing too delicious"? That is the funniest meal requirement ever! You have your job cut out for you, I hope you find something good for your special night. Steak maybe? Guys usually like that. :) Your cookies look great, I'll try making them a bit thicker next time.

  20. Have a fun dinner - I'm stumped, because I think most of my favorite recipes involve tomatoes, spice, or chocolate! I'm glad you liked these (more for you if you don't have to share with your husband) - they look lovely!

  24. They were quite delish, weren't they?

I like Lady's idea of crepes. With different fillings you can make some non-spicy ones as well as spicy.

    Great job on the cookies.

  28. I love that you and your sister-in-laws are having a Valentine's Day date dinner for your husbands, how sweet!! And your husband's "stomach requirements" are too funny, but hit close to home since I have one of those uber picky people for a husband too :) How about fettuccine alfredo? That's such a rich and luxurious dish and you can pair it with a meat or salad or anything else.

Your World Peace Cookies look so thick and delicious! I was very excited to finally make these as well and they certainly did not disappoint.

  30. Just found your blog today and got pretty excited to recognize an old friend in one of the pictures...also recognized a familiar name (from a recipe) of my favorite camp director at LoMia many moons ago. I love your blog, keep up the wonderful cooking and tell your Mom hi from Connie.

  31. Do you like panko crusted chicken with lemon sauce? Or even a tuscan steak with parmesan veggies and a raspberry ricotta tart? My ideas are flowing since I have been thinking up the same thing, but I wont leave a novel for you to read.

  37. what a great idea! But how in the world do you cook for someone with restrictions like that?!

  38. Anne, Ina has a roasted chicken that is delicious, comforting and I think you could do it with breasts with the bone in (for added flavor) and have individual servings. Its her Lemon Chicken with Croutons. Pretty easy cooking with kids. If you like chicken?
BTW.... the tower of chocolate is to swoon over. They look absolutely perfecto! I love them. Do you like lemon? The lemon tart from Smitten Kitchen just recently posted sounds very good too. happy Valentine's Day to all of you. I'll be thinking about your adventure. Sounds so fun!
