TWD- Arborio Rice Pudding

You know how food preferences tend to linger from your childhood, long after you should have gotten over them? Well, I still hold to my coconut aversion, however, avocados, rice pudding, and almost all nuts have been cleared off the bad list. It makes me wonder what else I'm holding out on that I might love. What do you like that you've avoiding since your childhood? Am I the only crazy one?

Well, with rice pudding back into the menu, I was excited to make this week's Tuesdays with Dorie selection, chosen by Isabelle. Since my hubby can't have chocolate, I was happy to see that all it took to convert this pudding over was a quick stir of chopped chocolate into the final product. Like many people mentioned, my pudding was more of a rice soup before the refrigeration. I was hoping it would thicken up but it sure didn't! As for flavor, I liked the vanilla better, especially with a sprinkling of cinnamon, even though the texture wasn't quite right.

Note- Dorie says the timing is off on the recipe in the book and too cook it for 55, not 35, minutes. I'd recommend a little spurt of high heat at the end to thicken it up, or maybe even putting the lid on for a few like my mom kept mentioning every time she saw the uncovered pot. I think I'll be trying out my Grandma's recipe soon- it's made with condensed milk, topped with meringue, and baked until it's a bit firm (though I'll still leave out the raisins... I haven't grown out of that aversion yet!) Thanks Isabelle (and Dorie) for the motivation to try something new!

Coming Next Week- Thanksgiving Twofer Pie!

  2. Love the little bowls. And childhood food aversions? I just did a post about french toast and how much I hated it as a kid. The photo of you is adorable and you are very blessed to have a young family. Good job on the rice pudding.

  3. I know what you mean about the childhood aversions.. I can't believe I didn't like avocado, but now I could probably eat a whole one and more! Your pics looks so nice.. I really like the red plate!

  4. Too bad we found out about the cooking times AFTER we made it! Oh well - tasty soup, I suppose!

  5. LOL I laughed when I saw avocados on your bad-now rethought list of childhood preferences... I feel the same about them!
MMmm... no wonder with such great looking rice puddings, it is now off the list! LOL beautiful!

  6. I can't believe all of us had so much trouble with something as simple as rice pudding. I cooked mine for an hour and fifteen minutes and it's still soupy!

Oh well, at least it tastes good right? And I love your little bowls!

  7. Good to know about the cooking times. I haven't made this yet but everyone is making me want to! Yours looks great!

  8. My pudding took over an hour and a half too cook (and I knew about the time change from Dorie). It wasn't worth it. I didn't care for the pudding. I also don't think it was sweet enough. But it WAS fun to say I've now made rice pudding!

  9. Ha! It turns out that rice pudding is MY childhood aversion! I am glad that you have gotten over yours! They look great!

  10. I LOVE your little bowls!! Your pics are amazing, as usual.

  11. Ha, give yourself a few more years and you'll be throwing in raisins with reckless abandon! Good job on this, and let us know how the baked pudding works - water baths are my nemesis.

ps, I am an avocado convert too!

  12. Oh yes, it is just crazy how powerful our food associations from childhood can be! Rice pudding is back on the "good" list for me too! Sorry that you didn't get the texture you wanted (although I thought that my soup version tasted pretty good, too!) It looks great anyway! Your grandma's recipe sounds yummy.

  13. I still hate mushrooms alone, but I can stand them in things. I used to loathe winter squash in all it's varieties, but Ina's risotto cured me of that!
I think this pudding tasted great, no matter the thickness. I like your pics! Looks yummy, Anne!

  15. I love the red plate in your pic! I too have always has a disdain for rice pudding and after trying it yesterday...I still hate it!

  16. I've crossed off the time and temp in the book so I have the corrections down.

These were pretty tasty if a bit liquidy.

  17. I liked the vanilla too. I can't picture chocolate rice pudding.
    Sorry yours didn't set up.
I know your pie will be awesome next week!

  18. Wish I'd have checked the P&Q before I made this as I ended up with soup. Tasty soup though! Your puddings look wonderful - love the cinnamon!

  19. Ooo - a baked rice pudding? I'm going to have to try that!

  20. I'm with you on the whole coconut thing. I can eat it in small amounts as part of a recipe but not when it's the star ingredient. I while I don't mind raisins, they have no business showing up in rice pudding. Yeesh!

  21. Your puddings look lovely. We didn't do so well in the taste department over here, so it remains with the following childhood aversions: liver, liver and onions, liver and bacon, liverwurst, anything with the word "liver" in it is definitely OUT. Oh, and rice pudding.

I am happy, however, that you made a new friend with yours...it's all about making new friends!

  22. I never really ate rice pudding either. It wasn't a staple in my family. Yours looks good though, sorry it was a little soupy. Can't wait to see your grandmother's recipe though.

  23. Well it looks delicious and I bet it tastes that way too. Strange how a lot of us had problems with those 3-4 little ingredients cooking up just right, huh? But in the end, it was good!

  24. I am seeing good comments about this recipe...I may have to try it with a more willing audience..namely not my husband.

  25. glad you liked it:) it looks great! i'm going to try adding more rice next time. as for childhood aversions... i hated chinese food. done a complete 180 on that ;)

  26. Mine were a little on the soupy side, too. I didn't know about Dorie telling us the timing was off until I started reading some blogs this afternoon. I better go fix that! And your Grandma's recipe sounds wonderful, and I am not even that big of a rice pudding fan. :o)

  27. I liked the vanilla a lot better as well.

  28. I may get to this someday - to take to a potluck or something. Grumpy won't eat rice pudding. But, yours looks yummy and it makes me want to try it!

  29. Looks great. I can't wait to see your grandmother's recipe. It sounds WAY better than traditional rice pudding!

  30. reading alot of rice soup posts (including mine).

Grandma's recipe sounds delish...I've heard of baking rice pudding, but have never tried it myself...I hope you'll share that recipe soon!

  31. Your pudding looks so nice! Sorry the texture was off. It's too bad so many missed the correction to the cooking time.

My childhood aversion was sweet potatoes. I can tolerate them now. I still can't stand most squash... blech!

  32. Your puddings look delicious! I liked the addition of cinnamon too.

  33. Topping it with meringue is a great way to switch it up a bit! I didn't like rice pudding much as a kid, but now it's my favorite dessert.

  34. A sprinkle of cinnamon...of course, that's just what it needed! Nice job. It seems like most of us either already love rice pudding, or had some aversion to it, but we all gave it our best.

  35. I still can't do coconut or nuts (i do try every now and then but...no) but avocados and peanut butter have been redeemed. Amazing how that stuff sticks with us.

  36. I'm there with you on the raisin aversion:)

    i don't like mushrooms...

and i really don't like ketchup (which may be partly because of "a bad experience" of a friend blowing ketchup at me through a straw...). that aversion will never be overcome:)

  37. I don't now what it is about coconut? I too have some sort of "thing" about it as well. Your pudding looks yummy and I'm glad to know I can put you in the "Likes" column. The preferences are interesting. I liked the vanilla best. Unusual that its not chocolate. Great job

  39. Love your bowls! Your 'rice soup' looks delicious!

  40. Just me catching up on what I've been too busy to read lately!

What have I gotten over? Nuts. I still don't like all nuts... but they aren't nearly as offensive as they were when I was a child.
